Libyan Spearmen: WIP No.3

A productive day at home watching and listening to the baseball home opener saw me get through the painting of eight Libyan spearmen and the complete finish (touch-ups, highlights, shields and spears) of the five you see in the photo below. Our April game of Hail Caesar has been officially scheduled for the 20th, so that will give me time to get this unit completed and based properly for the battle. This is going to be a fantastic unit.

Not thirty minutes ago a package was delivered to my home from across the pond. The ancient buildings from GrandManner have arrived and all I can say is wow! I felt like a little kid ripping into that box. Look for a complete review and photos on Sunday.

  2. Looking good. Are you going to keep the shields metallic, or fancy them up?

    1. Thanks! The shields are going to remain bronze with just the outer rim painted.

  4. These are looking great Jonathan. I wish people could see your army in person, it really is fantastic. I'll have to get some better pictures of it next time we play.

  5. Jonathan, can I ask how you seal/protect your 28mm? I've tried a couple of things and I'd appreciate your opinion on the topic.

    1. Hi Monty. I have tried two methods for sealing and protecting my painted figures. The method I currently use is the Games Workshop Purity Seal. It puts a nice matte finish on the models and does an adequate job of protecting without adding too much "bulk" to them. The other method I have used in the past is a two-step process of Krylon Crystal Clear Satin protector followed by Krylon Matte Finish. The figures didn't lose enough of their shine using these products for my tastes.

Which ever method you use you have to be super careful about "snowing" from the sealing product. Due to temperature differences, humidity and other factors you can get a small white dust that settles on your models. To avoid this I try to control the environment as much as possible by applying the final spray inside and running the can under hot water to make sure it is nice and warm before applying.

      Hope that helps!

    2. This helps a lot! I got frosting for the first time ever this summer on my 15mm Ottomans I painted in triads and I've been afraid to use Purity Seal ever since. It broke my heart because I didn't see the frosting until I brought the army in to take photos. It was a warm and humid day so the error goes to me. I never thought of warming the can. Interesting.

I've been brushing Future on and then hitting with a matte. I like the idea of Krylon spray in 2 coats. I'll have to buy some and give it a go!

    3. Glad I could help Monty and good luck. I got frosting on some ECW highlanders and I wanted to chuck them out the window in anger and frustration. I am soooo careful now.
